558.355 Monensin. Specifications: Monensin as the base or the sodium salt, contains a minimum of 90 percent monensin activity derived from monensin A and a minimum of 95 percent derived from monensin A plus B. Approvals for Type A medicated articles containing 60 and 80 grams per pound. Conditions of use: Cattle (pasture: slaughter, stocker, feeder, and dairy and beef replacement heifers) Amount: 150 milligrams per pound (0.033 percent) Indications: For increased rate of weight gain and for prevention and control of coccidiosis caused by Eimeria bovis and E. zuernii. Limitations: As protein-mineral blocks to be fed free-choice to cattle (slaughter, stocker, feeder, and dairy and beef replacement heifers) on pasture which may require supplemental feed. Provide 50 to 200 milligrams of monensin (0.34 to 1.33 pounds) per head per day, at least 1 block per 10 to 12 head of cattle. Roughage must be available at all times. Do not allow animals access to other protein blocks, salt or mineral, while being fed this product. Do not allow horses or other equines access to formulations containing (ingestion of monensin by equines has been fatal). Block's effectiveness in cull cows and bulls has not been established. Monensin medicated cattle feed is safe for use for cattle only. Consumption by unapproved species may result in toxic reactions; Do not allow horses or other equines access to formulations containing monensin. Ingestion of monensin by equines has been fatal. Do not exceed the levels of monensin recommended in the feeding directions, as reduced average daily gains may result. Do not feed to lactating dairy cattle. Labeling. A tolerance of 0.10 part per million (ppm) in cattle liver, 0.05 ppm in muscle, kidney, and fate. A tolerance of 0.05 ppm in goats edible tissue.
A tolerance for residue of monensin in chickens, turkeys and quail is not needed. A tolerance for residues of monensin in milk is not needed.
